Zermatt summer vacation
As home to one of the world’s most iconic peaks, the Matterhorn, Zermatt is a year-round destination every mountain lover must experience at least once. For mountain climbers, rock climbers, hikers, mountain bikers and Alpine cultural connoisseurs alike Zermatt provides the perfect basecamp to launch an unforgettable summer vacation from. The charming, car-free village of Zermatt is also one of the Alps most idyllic places to window shop or enjoy al fresco dining.
A top destination for rock climbers, Zermatt provides challenge seekers with access to routes and tours on 13,000-plus-foot peaks. For those who can never get enough time on the slopes, summer glacier skiing is available on the Matterhorn glacier paradise. Summer glacier hiking is also a popular Zermatt summer activity. Everything from famous overnight trekking routes to relaxing short hikes is available in the mountains and lakes, all of which provide unique views of the breathtaking Matterhorn.
One of the most unique Zermatt experiences is a ride in the Gornergrat Train, which transports passengers from the village center to the Gornergrat station in just 33 minutes. From here, the sightseeing, hiking, mountain biking and picnic-ing opportunities are endless and all spectacular. It’s possible to see 29 13,000-plus-foot peaks. You can even watch paragliders take off from the top of the railway. Built in the late 1800s, the Gornergrat Train is the world’s first fully electric cog railway.
